Mateo* was settling for an unhappy life.
From his journal…
He felt condemned.
“Can’t sleep… again. I keep screwing up with Jenny*. We’re not exactly fighting, but she looks at me with disappointment. She’s kind and tries to hide it, but I can see it in her eyes and on her lips. I know she’s thinking what I’m thinking – that I’m not the man she married 12 years ago.
He felt like a failure.
“Work’s gonna suck tomorrow. It’s my annual performance review, and I know Jim’s* going to be super critical. He’s been giving me this hard look lately. My hopes for advancing in the company are fading. I’m just not impressing the right people… not working hard enough.”
He wasn’t taking care of himself.
“I’ve got to get back in the gym and work out the way I used to. I hate my dad bod. HATE it. I hate having to buy new clothing to fit my expanding waistline. What happened to me? I drink coffee all day so I can stay awake and eat late at night because it makes me feel better. For a moment. Ugh… I’m a mess.”
He was disappointing his family.
“Traffic is nuts. By the time I get home, I want to explode! The thought of socializing is exhausting. I just want to decompress. So, I scroll through Instagram and YouTube. All those threads, memes, and videos used to make me laugh – but not so much anymore. Plus, I feel guilty for not giving my wife and kids the attention they deserve.”
He knew he couldn’t go it alone anymore.
“Maybe it’s time to try therapy. I don’t know what else to do. I disappoint myself, and I think others are sick of me. My smile is forced. Behind it is worry and disappointment. I need to do something for my wife and my kids, even if I don’t care about myself. I need to level up at work and show them what I can do when I’m in gear.”
